About us
Antiquariat Reinhold Pabel's roots began in Chicago way back in 1948 as Chicago Book Mart, a mail-order company specialized on detecting books from all over the world. ("Name the book, we'll get it"). Reinhold Pabel, ex-German prisoner of war, recollects the unusual firm genesis in his memories "Enemies are Human", which were first published by John C. Winston in 1955 and later translated into several languages.
Back in Germany in the mid-sixties an eight-year stopover followed in Bonn, before Pabel moved the business to his home town Hamburg in 1974. The book shop resides since in the historical buildings of the "Krameramt" (Merchant Guild), the oldest still preserved residential court of the Hanseatic town.
1982 a branch was opened in the Englische Planke, opposite the Baroque church St. Michaelis, known as "Michel", the landmark of Hamburg. Since 1991 the family enterprise is managed in second generation.
Antiquariat Reinhold Pabel is co-founder and advisory board of the annual Antiquarian Book Fair
Quod Libet in Hamburg.
Member of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels - German Publishers & Booksellers Association.
